Charanams performed at the presstigious, popular SummerStage Concert. Charanams played the opening act at the SummerStage main concert for the day featuring Wanda Jackson & Imelda May. Charanams will present the compositions from their winning performances at the Battle of the Boroughs.

SummerStage, a program of City Parks Foundation, presents performances of outstanding artistic quality, free of charge, to serve the diverse communities of New York City. The artists represent a breadth of genres and cultures and perform in an outdoor setting accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. SummerStage strives to develop audiences’ deepening appreciation for contemporary, traditional, and emerging artists as well as the communities in which these artists originate.

Charanams recently won The WNYC Ultimate Battle of the Boroughs – a city wide battle of the bands with over 500 entrants!

To celebrate their win, the Greene Space presented a featured concert of Charanams.

In this exclusive concert, Charanams performed the original compositions of
Nivedita ShivRaj that were based on Indian ragams, blending Carnatic style with elements of Jazz.

RagaChitra’s talented vocalists teamed up with Charanams, the carnatic jazz band to present
rare carnatic compositions on Vishnu, blending carnatic music with elements of Jazz.
The concert was a part of the Target First Saturday Concert series, celebrating the exhibition ”Vishnu- the blue skinned savior” at the Brooklyn Museum.

Nivedita ShivRaj’s composition Infinite Dhwani premier’s in 60×60 Athena Mix at Athena Festival in clebration of Women History Month at Murray State
University, Kentucky.

Vox Novus and the Athena Festival hosted by Murray State University invited composers/sound artists to submit recorded works 60 seconds or less in
length to be included in the ninth annual 60×60 project, the Athena Mix. 60 compositions were selected from 200 international submissions to be played
continuously in a one-hour concert. Submissions for the 2011 Athena Mix included submissions from women all over the globe, including submissions from New Zealand,
Italy, the Americas, Ukraine, Germany, Spain, Greece, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan. 60×60 is a one-hour-long show made by sequencing 60 pre-recorded pieces by 60
different composers, each piece a minute in length or shorter. Highlighting the work of a great many composers, 60×60 testifies to the vibrancy of contemporary
composition by present a diverse array of styles, aesthetics, and techniques being used today. 60×60 has received thousands of submissions from over 30 countries,
produced radio shows, created multimedia and multidisciplinary events, and released several albums.

RagaChitra returns to MMNY this year with a Veena Ensemble in the Mass Appeal segment.
Nivedita ShivRaj will conduct and lead a Veena ensemble of 7 to 8 veena players performing classical carnatic compositions and contemporary compositions.

Veena, the ancient multi-stringed instrument is majestic, and the music of Veena is graceful, melodious and mesmerising. The Veena Ensemble creates a web of intrigue and captivates the listener transporting them to a world of mythical beauty.

60×60 Dance will have 60 dances performed by more than 60 choreographers and dancers to the music of the 60×60 2008 International Mix. “Rain Dance” a composition of Nivedita ShivRaj will be performed at the event.

Nivedita ShivRaj’s composition “Rain Dance” will be part of the 60 x 60 Dance. Nivedita ShivRaj is the only carnatic musician to be chosen for the 60 x 60 project.

“Rain Dance” symbolizes our relationship with rain and portrays the joy that the rain showers bring to the world.
Just like rain inspiring the happy and colorful dance of a peacock, a jig in the rainy showers brings out the child in each one of us.

“Rain Dance” is a musical composition based on the Indian Raga – Amirtha Varshini (the sweet showers) and has been played on the multi-stringed instrument Veena with Indian musical instruments Mridangam and Morsing (Jews harp) along with digital music.

Nivedita ShivRaj presented a carnatic vocal concert with raga demonstration on various Ranjani ragas and taking us into the realms of the divine Ranjani ragas. Nivedita ShivRaj gave an insight into Ranjani Ragas, their features, history and some interesting snippets on Ranajani ragas.

Nivedita was supported on the vocal by Janani Kannan and Samyuktha ShivRaj.
